Our second work day was postponed due to bad weather the day before and the muddy conditions that resulted from it. Check back for updates on when that will be rescheduled.
In the meantime, we still have plots available. Just a few left, and we really want to see them filled!

Work Day
Part one of our beautiful spring work day involved some of our gardening families coming out to help measure out plots. 9' by 11' looks like the perfect starting garden size. We've got 16 of the plots completed with some kids coming out after school to help finish the last 6. It's so exciting to see things coming together.
We've got our fencing ordered, mulch for the paths on the way and even had a dear member of our team translate some of our literature into Spanish so that we can hopefully reach out to our Spanish-speaking community here in the area. Another area church has also asked us for advice on getting a garden started there on their grounds, too, and we hope to have a moment to ourselves to go talk to them for a bit. It's a lot more work than people understand, I think, but it would be amazing to see more and more of our churches and such come to join the cause. The more people we can get growing their own healthy foods, the better, and the more people who need the help we can give, the better.

In the News
Join us at the Tuscarawas County Public Library for an informational meeting about the first community garden open to the public in Tuscarawas county. Here you can find out more about how to rent a plot for the summer; what it is we're looking to do; and how you can help us build on our vision.
We look forward to a great spring and taking a bite out of food insecurity in our community. We hope to see you there!

Empty no more...
Today was a busy day for us. We had a meeting with the Healthy Tusc Task Force to discuss upcoming events, and then we met to discuss our own upcoming events at the Garden. Our goal is to make the grounds inviting to everyone -- not just our gardeners or our church members. We're really excited about the things we hope to bring to the Garden to help fund it but more importantly to help promote healthy family time. The rest of the grounds, with the pond, soccer fields, picnic pavilion and playground are already an asset to the community. We're excited about making it even more family-friendly. With recent statistics stating that as many as 1 in 6 Americans suffer from some sort of food insecurity, we had to do something. By giving some people the chance to grow some food for themselves, we're going to be doing a small part in aleviating that. And it all started with an empty field...
On another note, I received my first two seed catalogs in the mail today. Yeah! Now, I have to convince myself over the next few months that a pomegranate tree sized for a patio will not fit well in my house in the winter months, so it will not make a sound investment in my landscape. But, that little apple tree...

Welcome to our blog!
We are Planting the Seeds, a grass-roots community group made up of a wide-range of gardening fans, who wish to see a community garden in the New Philadelphia/Dover area so that we can share the benefits with others who wish to grow their own food.
We started out as a couple of people with an idea but found that we have some partners in the community with the same vision. We've found our land-- generously donated for use by Faith Christian Church-- and are working on some funding issues. We'd love your support and thank you for stopping by.
